This guide is designed to help navigate the complexities of flood insurance. Developed in partnership with insurance, financial, and recovery experts and the Maribyrnong community, it serves as a valuable resource for those impacted by flooding.

The Flood Insurance Guide: A Maribyrnong Community Initiative was designed to help communities navigate the complexities of flood insurance.
The idea for this guide came directly from community members impacted by the 2022 Maribyrnong River Flood. Through conversations in English and Vietnamese, the community shared their experiences and expressed the need for clear, accessible information on flood insurance — information they wished they had before the flood.
The guide features content from legal, financial and recovery experts, as well as tips for mental health and wellbeing during the aftermath of a flood. It offers practical information, making it easier for residents to understand the reasons for taking out insurance, how to make a claim and the complaint process.
Maribyrnong City Council partnered with GenWest on this project because of our expertise in designing and delivering inclusive and accessible programs. This has been demonstrated through our previous recovery activities and the Our Community, Our Voice report.
The guide is designed to make insurance information more accessible to the community.
